Remember playing Super Mario 64 on the Nintendo 64?
Now imagine pulling Mario out of the game and watching him run around on your actual desk.
Well, someone just made that happen.
Developer and XR specialist Lucas Martinic has recreated Super Mario 64 as a fully interactive mixed reality experience using Claude Opus 5.5 and PICO CLI.
And the result is absolutely magical.
This isn't just a giant virtual screen floating in your room.
It's a genuine 3D experience where the original game world exists inside your physical environment.
Here's what makes this experiment special:
Native 90 FPS: The original Super Mario 64 runs at 90 frames per second in mixed reality.
True 3D rendering: The world has proper spatial depth, rather than simply displaying a flat game window.
Mixed reality gameplay: Explore the Mushroom Kingdom through a floating portal in your room.
Mario in your room: Literally pick Mario up from the game and place him on your real desk.
AI-assisted development: Claude Opus 5.5 and PICO CLI helped bring the experience to life.
Original game mechanics: Experience the classic Nintendo 64 gameplay in an entirely new way.
And here's my favorite part.
This isn't an AI-generated imitation of Super Mario 64.
It's the actual game, adapted from its decompiled code to work in a spatial computing environment.
The developer used Claude Opus 5.5 together with PICO's development tools to create the mixed reality integration.
The demonstration runs on unreleased PICO hardware, and the mod isn't publicly available yet.
It's also an independent fan project, not an official Nintendo or PICO release.
But here's why I find this so exciting.
We've spent decades playing video games inside rectangular screens.
Now we're getting closer to a world where those games can escape the screen and become part of our physical surroundings.
And with AI coding agents dramatically simplifying XR development, experiments like this are becoming increasingly accessible to independent creators.
A 30-year-old video game. Modern mixed reality hardware. One developer. And an AI coding agent.
Sometimes the future of gaming isn't about creating another photorealistic AAA blockbuster.
Sometimes it's about bringing a little piece of your childhood into the real world.
And honestly, watching Mario run around on a desk might be one of the most charming XR experiments I've seen recently.
