Remember when AI assistants were just little text boxes on our screens?
Well, apparently, that wasn't human enough.
Meet Echo by Realbotix, a humanoid robot with realistic silicone skin, facial expressions, and AI-powered conversations.
And yes, you can now preorder one.
For approximately $85,000.
Finally, ChatGPT can tell you "I understand how you feel" while looking directly into your eyes.
Here's what Realbotix is offering:
Humanlike appearance: Realistic silicone skin, animated facial expressions, and natural-looking movements.
Four personalities: Choose between Aria, Mila, Dave, and Amar, each with a different appearance, voice, and character.
AI conversations: Advertised compatibility with ChatGPT, Claude, and Google Gemini.
Personalized interactions: Adjust your robot's personality and conversational behavior.
Two sizes: A tabletop companion or a full-size humanoid with articulated fingers.
But here's where things get really interesting.
Meet Vinci Vision, a $24,950 upgrade that gives your robot something resembling social awareness.
According to Realbotix, Vinci can:
Recognize familiar faces.
Maintain eye contact during conversations.
Track behavior and engagement.
Interpret facial expressions and emotional cues.
Adapt its interactions based on what it sees.
So now your chatbot won't just give you a questionable answer.
It can also watch your facial expression change while you're reading it.
Wonderful.
Of course, accurately identifying someone's emotions from facial expressions is a difficult scientific problem. Realbotix hasn't published independent validation of Vinci's emotional recognition accuracy.
But at least we know exactly how much the attempt costs.
Let's talk money.
Tabletop Echo: $11,950
Full-body Echo: $59,950
Vinci Vision upgrade: $24,950
Full-body Echo + Vinci: $84,900
Required Vinci AI subscription: $199 per month
Preorder deposit: $199
Without Vinci, AI subscriptions start at $19.99 per month.
And what exactly does your $85,000 robot do?
Primarily, it talks, listens, makes facial expressions, maintains eye contact, and interacts with people.
Walking around your house and doing the dishes? Not part of the advertised package.
So think less "robot butler" and more "very expensive AI conversation partner."
Realbotix plans to manufacture just 250 Echo robots in 2027:
225 tabletop units and 25 full-body versions.
Deliveries are expected to begin in the second half of 2027, initially in the United States.
And here's what I find fascinating.
We've spent years trying to make chatbots sound more human.
Now we're putting those chatbots inside machines that look increasingly human, too.
But does an AI actually become more understanding just because it has a face?
Or are we simply making it easier for humans to believe that it understands us?
That's a much more interesting question than whether a silicone robot can smile convincingly.
Although I suspect the first customers will come up with some rather creative applications long before the user manual catches up.
The future of AI companionship is here.
It has a face.
It has a personality.
And naturally, it has a monthly subscription.
