Remember MOSS-Image, the impressive open-source 5-billion-parameter image generator released by OpenMOSS in October?
Well, apparently, generating images was just the beginning.
The Chinese AI team is back with MOSS-Live, a real-time voice assistant that can listen, speak, understand video, and perform tasks simultaneously.
And they've got quite a few more models in development.
First, meet MOSS-Live.
Most traditional voice assistants work like walkie-talkies.
You speak. They listen. You stop. They answer.
MOSS-Live takes a different approach.
It's a full-duplex conversational AI system.
That means it can keep listening while it's speaking, creating a much more natural conversation.
Here's what makes it interesting:
Natural interruptions: Understands the difference between a genuine interruption and a casual "uh-huh."
Smarter pauses: Gives you time to think instead of assuming you've finished speaking.
Conversation memory: Can resume its response from where it stopped after an interruption.
Simultaneous translation: Translates speech while you're still talking.
Camera and screen understanding: Processes live visual information alongside audio.
Background agents: Delegates complex research and tasks while continuing the conversation.
Proactive interaction: Can respond to relevant events without waiting for a new question.
Imagine talking to your AI assistant while it researches something, checks your screen, translates a conversation, and continues working.
Without having to constantly interrupt the interaction.
MOSS-Live is currently available in beta, including through a real-time API. The API documentation lists limited-time free access.
But here's where things get even more interesting.
OpenMOSS isn't building just another voice assistant.
It's building an entire family of multimodal AI models.
Here's what the team has already released:
MOSS-Image: An open 5B image generation model with layout control and text rendering.
MOSS-TTS: Speech synthesis, voice cloning, and expressive speech generation.
MOSS-Audio: Understanding speech, environmental sounds, and music.
MOSS-VL: Image and video understanding, including real-time visual streams.
MOVA: An open-source model that generates synchronized video and audio together.
MOVA is particularly interesting.
Released in January 2026, it generates both moving images and their accompanying sound in a unified model.
And the weights are available on Hugging Face.
Now for what's coming next.
During a recent Reddit AMA, the MOSS development team shared several upcoming projects.
1. MOSS-Anime
A specialized image generation model focused on anime aesthetics, with a faster Turbo version also planned.
2. MOSS Image Editing
A new model designed for editing images and working with visual references, potentially combining both capabilities.
3. MOSS-TTS 2.0
A major speech generation update focused on expressive styles and fine-grained emotional control.
The team is targeting November 2026.
4. A New Compact AI Video Model
This one might be the most interesting.
OpenMOSS says it's training an experimental model that generates video and synchronized audio together.
The goal is better motion, improved audio-video alignment, and a smaller architecture that could eventually run on consumer GPUs.
And that would be a pretty significant development for local AI video generation.
Of course, these are development plans, not finished releases.
The video model's final size, hardware requirements, performance, and release date haven't been confirmed.
And as we've learned from several ambitious AI model roadmaps, there's a considerable difference between promising something and actually shipping it.
But here's what I find fascinating about OpenMOSS.
Instead of focusing all its efforts on building another general-purpose chatbot, the team is developing specialized models for different ways humans communicate and experience the world.
Speech. Sound. Images. Video. Real-time interaction.
And increasingly, those capabilities are coming together.
The interesting future of AI might not be one gigantic model doing absolutely everything.
It might be a coordinated system of specialized models that can see, hear, speak, create, and act.
OpenMOSS seems rather interested in that future.
Now let's see how much of this roadmap actually ships.
