Apparently, everyone wants to be a film director now. And AI startups are making absolutely sure we have enough software for that. Meet OpenDirector v0.1.0, a new open-source AI filmmaking platform from ThinkFlowLab, powered by vLLM-Omni and compatible with MiniMax H3 video generation. And unlike another standalone AI video generator, this one attempts to bring the entire production process into a single workspace. From an idea to a finished short film. Scripts. Storyboards. Visual references. AI-generated footage. Editing. Audio. Final export. All inside a locally running application. Here's what OpenDirector can do: 1. AI-Assisted Creative Direction Start with an idea and discuss it with the built-in AI assistant. Develop your concept, generate visual references, create assets, and organize everything into a structured production workflow. 2. Infinite Canvas for Visual Production Instead of throwing every generated image and video into one enormous history panel, OpenDirector gives you a visual canvas. Organize images, videos, audio, and text. Connect related assets and references. Generate variations and refine individual elements. Review generation history. Keep your projects organized on your own computer. A revolutionary concept, apparently: knowing which render belongs to which project. 3. Specialized Storyboard Presets OpenDirector includes several useful presets for keeping visual elements consistent: Character Three-View: Generate multiple views of a character. Face Three-View: Explore facial features from different angles. Product Three-View: Create consistent product references. Storyboard: Generate four separate storyboard frames. Multi-Camera: Explore a scene from four different camera perspectives. These workflows help establish characters, environments, and composition before generating the final footage. 4. AI Video Generation with MiniMax H3 OpenDirector supports self-hosted models through configurable inference services. The developers demonstrated the platform using FastH3 served through vLLM-Omni. Their example is a 60-second animated short film called We Can Still Win, about a middle-aged Dota 2 player. The video was generated using an AI-assisted workflow, then assembled inside OpenDirector. 5. Actual Video Editing And yes, there's a timeline. Not just another collection of generated clips. You can: Arrange video and audio tracks. Trim clips and adjust their timing. Change playback speed. Control audio volume. Preview your sequence. Render the final video to MP4. 6. Export to Professional Editing Software This might be one of my favorite features. OpenDirector doesn't force you to finish everything inside its own editor. It supports: MP4: Render the finished video. FCPXML: Export an editing timeline for compatible professional NLE workflows. JSON: Export structured project data. Asset bundles: Package your media for further editing. So you can use AI to assemble the first version and continue refining it in another application. And here's the important part. OpenDirector is local-first, not necessarily 100% offline. The application runs on your computer, and projects are stored locally. But generation can use either self-hosted models or external API providers. If you connect cloud models, your generation requests are processed by those services. Running powerful models such as MiniMax H3 locally also requires suitable GPU hardware. The developers provide a skill that lets your AI coding agent handle installation. Give Claude Code or Codex this prompt: "Install and start OpenDirector by following the official installation skill: https://github.com/ThinkFlowLab/OpenDirector/blob/main/.agents/skills/install-opendirector/SKILL.md Check the system requirements first, explain what needs to be installed, and ask before changing my existing environment." The project requires Python 3.11+, Node.js, Git, and FFmpeg. And it's free and open source under Apache 2.0. One important caveat: this is version 0.1.0, the first public release. The team hasn't yet verified every workflow end to end, and MP4 rendering currently requires keeping the editor open in Chrome or Edge. OpenDirector is at least taking a useful approach by combining AI generation with project management, visual references, editing, and exports that can continue into professional workflows. It's turning hundreds of disconnected generations into one coherent film. And that's where tools like this could become genuinely valuable. Now, if the next AI director could also organize my existing render folders, that would be an even bigger breakthrough.
