What if you could describe a 3D character in a single prompt and get a textured, rigged model directly inside Blender? Without relying on expensive cloud-based 3D generation services? Meet StableGen, a free, open-source Blender add-on that brings AI-powered 3D generation, texturing, and character rigging into your existing workflow. And the best part? It works with AI models running on your own hardware. Here's what StableGen can do: Text to 3D: Generate textured 3D models from simple text descriptions. Image to 3D: Turn reference images into actual 3D geometry. Automatic rigging: Create character skeletons and skin weights using SkinTokens. AI texturing: Generate detailed textures using SDXL, Qwen Image, and other supported models. PBR materials: Create albedo, roughness, metallic, and normal maps. Texture editing: Modify specific parts of a model without regenerating everything. Animation support: Retarget existing FBX and BVH animations onto generated characters. Game engine export: Export assets to Unity, Unreal Engine, Godot, or web-based 3D projects. And here's how it works. StableGen combines several specialized AI models through ComfyUI. TRELLIS.2 generates the 3D mesh. SkinTokens builds the character rig. Diffusion models generate and refine the textures. And Blender brings everything together into an editable 3D asset. No need to manually switch between multiple AI generation websites. But there's an important catch. Running these models locally still requires a capable computer. The developers recommend an NVIDIA GPU, with around 8GB of VRAM for SDXL texturing and 16GB or more for some advanced image models. You'll also need Blender, ComfyUI, and enough disk space for the model weights. And while automatic rigging is impressive, complex characters may still need manual cleanup before they're ready for production. Still, this is a fascinating development for indie game creators, 3D artists, and anyone experimenting with AI-powered character creation. We're moving from generating static 3D objects to creating assets that can actually be animated, edited, and used in games. And increasingly, we can do it on our own machines. From a text prompt to a rigged 3D character. Right inside Blender.
