Remember when AI assistants were just answering questions, writing emails, and generating code? Well, apparently, now they want to know where all your money went. Meet Claude Personal Finance, a new feature from Anthropic that lets you connect your actual bank accounts and ask Claude questions about your finances. And yes, your AI assistant can finally tell you exactly how much money you've wasted this month. Wonderful. Here's how it works. Anthropic has partnered with Plaid, the financial connectivity platform used by thousands of financial applications. You choose which bank accounts to connect, authenticate directly through Plaid, and grant Claude read-only access to your financial information. What can Claude actually do? Track your spending: Find out where your money went this month. Analyze transactions: Categorize expenses and identify spending patterns. Monitor subscriptions: Discover recurring payments you may have forgotten about. Check upcoming bills: See what's due before your next payday. Plan your budget: Ask whether you can afford a vacation, a major purchase, or another subscription you probably don't need. Spot unusual charges: Identify duplicate payments, unexpected fees, and suspicious spending patterns. Create dashboards: Generate spending charts, cash flow summaries, and financial overviews. And here's the interesting part. Claude can read up to 24 months of transaction history from your connected accounts. So you can ask something like: "Claude, why did I spend so much money last month?" And instead of receiving generic financial advice, it can actually examine your transactions. Or: "Can I afford a two-week trip to Turkey without destroying my family budget?" Claude can look at your balances, upcoming payments, and spending history to help you estimate the impact. Now for the obvious question. Are we really comfortable giving an AI assistant access to our bank accounts? Anthropic says the integration is strictly read-only. According to the company: Claude cannot transfer money between accounts. It cannot make purchases or initiate payments. It cannot execute investment trades. It doesn't receive your banking passwords. You can disconnect your accounts whenever you want. And there's another privacy promise. Anthropic says conversations inside the Personal Finance hub aren't used to train its AI models. However, financial information shared with Claude outside that dedicated hub is subject to your regular privacy settings. The connected data is also handled by Plaid and relevant service providers under their respective policies. So while read-only access is a meaningful safeguard, connecting your finances still involves sharing sensitive information with additional services. And there's one more catch. Claude can make mistakes when interpreting financial data. Balances may be outdated, and missing accounts or duplicated transactions can distort the picture. So don't fire your accountant just yet. Availability: Claude Personal Finance launched in beta on November 5, 2026. It's gradually rolling out to: Claude Pro Claude Max Claude Ultra United States only, for now. The feature works on the web, desktop, iOS, and Android, but isn't currently supported in Claude Code, scheduled tasks, or Claude Duet. And here's what I find particularly interesting. AI assistants are gradually moving from answering questions about the world to understanding our actual lives. Our emails. Our calendars. Our work. And now our bank accounts. In theory, that could make personal financial planning considerably more accessible. In practice, I'm looking forward to a conversation like this: Me: "Claude, where's my money?" Claude: "Well, according to your transactions, you spent $847 on AI subscriptions, $326 on API credits, and another $199 on a tool you opened once." Me: "I understand. Please disconnect my bank immediately." The future of personal finance is looking interesting. And slightly judgmental.
