Remember the good old days of ASCII art, pixel graphics, and the demoscene?
Well, here's a little nostalgia trip.
I found Devault, a free browser-based ASCII art generator that transforms ordinary images and videos into animated artwork made entirely from characters, dots, and symbols.
And the amount of customization is honestly ridiculous.
Here's what you can do:
Images and videos: Turn photos and moving footage into ASCII animations.
10 visual styles: Classic ASCII, Braille, halftone, dithering, brick mosaics, and more.
14 presets: From vintage computer terminals to Matrix-style digital rain.
Full creative control: Adjust character density, colors, detail, outlines, and glow.
Retro effects: Add scanlines, CRT distortion, film grain, and chromatic aberration.
Video export: Save your creations as MP4, including 1080p and 4K.
And here's the best part.
This isn't just a static retro filter.
The tool rebuilds your images and video frames using customizable patterns of characters and shapes, with a live preview.
Everything runs locally in your browser. No uploading your media to a server.
You can experiment without an account. A free Google or email sign-in is only required when you want to export your work.
Naturally, I couldn't resist.
So I threw Jessica and Mulan into it.
And the results are strangely mesmerizing.
Is this useful? Maybe.
Is it absolutely delightful for anyone who grew up loving ASCII art and the demoscene?
Definitely.
