Smart TVs have become ridiculous.
You buy a television, turn it on, and somehow end up staring at advertisements, sponsored recommendations, and apps you never asked for.
One developer finally decided he'd had enough.
So he used Claude Code to reverse-engineer his TV and rebuild the entire home screen.
Meet Free My TV, an open-source project that gives smart TVs a clean, Apple TV-inspired interface without the usual advertising clutter.
And the results are pretty impressive.
Here's what he achieved:
Replaced the stock interface with a minimalist, Apple TV-style home screen
Removed sponsored content, banners, and autoplaying promotions
Disabled unnecessary preinstalled apps and background services
Reported approximately 70% lower RAM usage
Claimed a 3× faster interface
Added customizable apps, recommendations, weather, and automatic light/dark themes
The public repository also documents a 60% memory reduction for the home screen on a tested TCL Google TV.
And here's the best part.
He made the whole thing open source.
Free My TV can be installed on compatible smart TVs, customized using Claude Code, and reversed if you want your original interface back.
No root access required. No permanent deletion of the original system apps.
It's a fascinating example of AI-assisted reverse engineering and software customization.
Instead of accepting whatever interface the manufacturer decided to ship, you can increasingly build something that actually works for you.
Imagine buying a $1,000 TV and needing an AI coding agent to remove the advertisements.
Actually, don't imagine it.
That's pretty much where we are.
