Anthropic just entered the race for the ultimate personal AI assistant. Meet Claude Duet, a new proactive AI agent powered by Claude Opus 5.5. And unlike regular Claude, this one doesn't just sit around waiting for your prompts. It actually comes to you first. Claude Duet monitors your connected apps, identifies things that need attention, sends morning briefings, and works on tasks in the background, even when your computer is turned off. Here's what makes it interesting: Claude Opus 5.5: Anthropic's powerful reasoning model handles the work. One ongoing conversation: Your tasks, questions, and projects live in a single continuous chat. Proactive monitoring: Duet checks connected apps every few hours and alerts you when something matters. Background execution: Its own virtual computer and browser let it work independently of your devices. 6,000+ connectors and plugins: Access tools through Claude Marketplace, including Gmail, Slack, Notion, Stripe, Shopify, and more. AI-powered shopping: Duet can purchase products using Stripe Link or Shopify Shop Pay, with your approval. You can ask it to manage emails, prepare financial reports, build dashboards, schedule meetings, develop web apps, or simply figure out what deserves your attention today. But there's something I find a little strange. Anthropic chose a single-agent experience built around one never-ending conversation. Personally, I'm not entirely convinced this is better than having multiple specialized agents working on different projects. We've already seen similar debates around OpenAI's Dots. And then there's the security. In true Anthropic fashion, Claude Duet comes with an impressive collection of safeguards: The agent never directly sees your passwords or authentication tokens. A dedicated safety classifier protects sensitive information. Sending messages, making payments, signing documents, and deleting data require your approval. Trading stocks and transferring money between accounts are prohibited, even with permission. So yes, your AI assistant can help run your business. It just can't become your personal hedge fund manager. There's another catch. Claude Duet shares usage limits with your regular Claude subscription, including the tokens consumed by background tasks. And while the 6,000+ integrations sound impressive, that's the broader Marketplace catalog, not a guarantee that every integration works perfectly in Duet today. Availability: Claude Duet is launching as a research preview on iOS, Android, and the web. For now, access is limited to US subscribers on Claude Pro and Max plans, through a waitlist. Still, I'm genuinely curious about this one. Opus 5.5 is a powerful foundation for an autonomous agent, and Anthropic's approach to combining reasoning, persistent context, and background execution could make Duet a serious competitor to OpenAI Dots, Meta Muse, and other proactive assistants. The AI assistant wars are getting interesting. And apparently, the next big feature isn't answering your questions. It's knowing what you need before you even ask.
